Caring For Hair Brushes & Combs

We all use them and actually, can't be without them. Hair brushes and combs are at times one of the most neglected areas of a beauty regiment. Not only are we often careless about what we buy but ignore the care and upkeep. But doing so is fairly simple and easy, and can be an advantage to keeping your hair looking good.

First, try to remember to clean hair from yours after each use. Trapped hair in your brush can tangle with your own hair and snap it, which causes breakage. Oils or hair product can collect on the brush or comb and accummulate dust or dirt, as well. Be sure to give yours a quick cleaning by pulling out any captured hair. This should suffice in removing any product or oils from the bristles.

From time to time, you will want to fully clean your brushes and combs. Place each item into a flat pan and fill with warm water, a teaspoon or so of baking soda (depending on the size of the container you're using) and soak everything overnight. Before removing from the solution, make sure build up is loose. You can brush the items against each other vigorously to further loosen any remaining build up. Place on a towel and let dry.

You'll have brushes and combs that are clean and fresh, and you'll minimize breakage to your tresses. Do the above once a month or so, and if you find a favorite brush or comb purchase an extra set to minimize cleaning/care time. You can then give everything a good cleaning less frequently as you'll be rotating out your combs and brushes. -- Jeanne Blain
