There's no secret to putting together a great look of any kind, and the best part is it's something you can do easily on your own. All it takes are a few strategies that top stylists use, whether it's in home decor, creating an event or in your closet. The same strategy and approach can be taken no matter what you're trying to create. Here's how:
The first question any pro will ask is 'what look do you want?' and 'what do you need?' so start here by asking yourself. If it's that you'd like a chic mid-century style living room or a wardrobe that is as hip as a model in Vogue, get the details. Now, ask yourself what you need. Is it plenty of space for guests or family? An odd shaped room that you'll need to think about? Plenty of good casual pieces for weekend wear? If needed, write it down.
Once you've got an idea of what you like and what you need, it's time to start really honing in on the look and feel of whatever it is that you want. If you've got time to create a vision board, snip magazine clippings and other items and paste to paper or posterboard. You can also use online tools such as Pinterest to do similar. Or if you're super busy (as most of us are), just make a few notes of things you've seen out and about that inspired you, or snap a picture with your smart phone.
After you've finished 1 and 2, it's time to go out and shop. Either shop online or hit stores but make a day or evening of it to allow enough time. You don't necessarily have to buy anything right away -- this can be a good time for getting more ideas of what you like and want. Make note of what stands out to you, what you like and of course, buy whatever items fit the look and feel you want.
As you bring in the items for whatever it is you are working on, start to work to pull it all together. This is the fun part! 'Personal style' is all about you the individual so enjoy experimenting and playing with your own whether it is in your house or closet. There are no real rules except what works together -- what that looks like to you should be up to you, so enjoy it! Don't worry if it doesn't all come together right away. In time you'll finish and have a look and style at home, in your wardrobe, etc. that is all your own.
