If you've moved out of the phase of non-stop meals on the go and you're starting to cook and/or entertain at home, chances are you're finding that you lack the tools of the trade. Without a doubt having the right implements makes it all much easier. A good potato peeler can be worth its weight in gold the day you've got to tackle something like peeling jicama. A good wisk, and a toaster which you can find in very chic designs and use for everything from toasting bagels to making dessert. Sharp knife sets including both those for cutting/chopping food and those guests use, bakeware (glass or metal), pots and pans, and of course, cookie racks. Nothing makes a house a home than the smell of fresh cookies! Speaking of a sweet tooth, a good, strong ice cream scoop is easier to use and more durable than using one from the drawer. Go with a utensil set to snap up items like spatulas, mixing spoons, etc. If you're really getting into cooking, you'll also likely want a garlic press. A cutting board is also a must -- plastic can be better if you cook a lot of meat, fish, etc. as it's easier to clean. Whether you're starting fresh or updating what you've already got, you'll find these items at most home stores -- Target, Ikea, Bed, Bath and Beyond, etc. Most items are relatively expensive but remember you get what you pay for. What's cool about today's kitchen must-haves is that many tie in a range of cool, fun, and other design and style. Explore and experiment. -- Jeanne Blain
