Great stuff in your home and life doesn't always mean you've got to hit boutiques and shops, or spend a lot of money. There are endless ways you can create an amazing vibe with do-it-yourself decor, and this week we are all about glass etching. This tactic dates back to the 1920s and essentially creates design onto glass pieces -- vases, bowls, drinking glasses, serverware, etc. All it takes is an etching product, available at any craft store or online. There are a range of products to choose from. From there, the sky is the limit.
To etch a piece, wash it well to make sure it's clean and dry. Then, get to decorating. You can use stencils, free hand designs depending on what etching product you use, or as with our example at left, tape the item into a cool design. From there appy the etching product making sure you are in a well ventilated area (especially when using a spray). Let dry for about an hour and a half and if desired, apply a second coat. Let dry a bit longer and your piece is finished. -- Jeanne Blain
